WHY DO I NEED MY FRUIT, VEGETABLES, & DAIRY? Nutrients

What do these nutrients do?

Vitamin A

Protects color vision and skin. Works with vitamin E to fight the bad stuff in the body. Helps build strong bones and teeth, and helps the heart. Aids in wound healing and helps the body to absorb iron. Aids in blood clotting.

VEGETABLES, & DAIRY.

Calcium Vitamin C Vitamin K

Where do these nutrients come from? Dark leafy greens, cantaloupe, carrots, apricots, red peppers, tomatoes. Milk, yogurt, cheese, leafy vegetables. Not cottage cheese! Citrus fruits, dark green vegetables, blackberries. Dark leafy greens, spinach, kale

Eating all my: Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, and Dairy GRAIN (1 oz) : FRUIT (1 piece):

DAIRY (1 cup): VEGETABLES(1/2 cup):

Tape over this area with clear tape and then with a dry erase marker, check off a box as you enjoy food from each food group. After each day, wipe off this area and start again. See how many days you can eat ALL the recommended servings! Grains = 5-6oz, Dairy = 3cups, Fruit = 1.5-2cups, Vegetables = 2-2.5cups

Simple, tasty fruits and veggies

 Tear dark leafy greens into pieces, toss with a tsp. of oil, sauté, and eat with whole wheat pasta and a little parmesan cheese. Add more veggies for extra flavor!  Cut up an apple, sprinkle with cinnamon, microwave for 1.5 min and top with yogurt.  Put yogurt on graham crackers or a whole wheat bagel and layer with different fruits to make your own fruit pizza!

Choose Health: What’s so great about fiber and whole grains?

Try this experiment at home: Equally divide 1 cup of orange juice into 2 bowls. Place a slice of whole wheat bread into one bowl and a slice of white bread into the other bowl. Wait 10 minutes. Now lift out the slices of bread: What happened to the white bread? What happened to the wheat bread? The orange juice is like the acid in your stomach, the wheat bread absorbed it (because of the higher fiber) and the white bread was destroyed by it – not as much fiber. MAKE AT LEAST HALF OF YOUR GRAINS WHOLE GRAINS!

Meal changes:

Fruit for dessert, vegetable with breakfast, or a whole grain with dinner. This month take a look at breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner – and think “Is there anything I could change or improve?” Write down any changes you would make to one breakfast, one lunch, one snack and one dinner and bring this to your coach for an entry into the prize drawing for Colorado Rapids gear at the end of the season! Soccer for Success

Marzo 2014

VEGETABLES, & DAIRY.

Vitamina A Calcio Vitamina C Vitamina K

Verduras verdes oscuras, melón, zanahorias, albaricoques, pimientos rojos, tomate. Leche, yogur, queso, verduras de hojas grandes. !No el requesón! Las frutas cítricas, verduras verdes oscuras, morras negras. Verduras , espinacas, col rizada

Comiendo todas mis: Frutas, Verduras, Granos, y Leche GRANOS (1 oz) :

LECHE (1 vaso):

FRUTA (1):

VERDURAS(1/2 vaso):

Granos = 5-6oz, Leche = 3vasos, Fruta = 1.5-2 vasos Verduras=2.5vasos

  

Simple, frutas y verduras sabrosas
