St Gabriel Celebrates Catholic Education Special Daily Mass will be celebrated with our students at Notre Dame Academy at our St Joseph campus on Wednesday, January 25 at 9:30am. Plan to attend this Mass with our children.

Stewardship-Sharing Our Treasure with the Community

“ACCL – A COMMUNITY CARING FOR LIFE” IS THE JANUARY RECIPIENT!

The second collection in January will be used to help our local “Southwest Options for Women” (previous name – Minnetonka LifeCare Center) on Mainstreet in Hopkins. A small portion will be set aside for our ACCL Committee to provide Pro-Life Education, including future speakers, pamphlets, DVDs, flyers, postage, etc. Parenting programs, child development classes, financial assistance and even housing are a part of what Options For Women Centers provide.

2

It’s not enough to say “don’t have an abortion” — we can all be a part of helping women consider the pro-life decision by letting them know about the no-cost services and life-affirming solutions available for women. The Southwest Options for Women is expanding! They will continue to support people with pregnancy testing, maternity and baby needs including formula, diapers, baby food and more! They hope to purchase an ultrasound Machine and more! Pray that all these mothers can make a fresh start, a new beginning and share a positive future with their babies. Cash, coin, and checks are welcome or give online direct from your bank account or credit card. Checks are to be made out to St. Gabriel the Archangel Church with “ACCL” written in the memo section. Visit the parish website to give online. Please be generous.

Dear Parishioners, At a recent home visit to celebrate the anointing of the sick, a parishioner asked me why we anoint the person’s hands along with the forehead. I had never thought to wonder about that, and I didn’t know the answer. So I looked it up. Some of you may remember that before Vatican II, it was customary to anoint the five senses – eyes, ears, nostrils, lips and hands. With each anointing, the priest said “Through this holy unction and His own most tender mercy may the Lord pardon thee whatever sins or faults thou hast committed by sight [by hearing, by smell, by taste, by touch.”] That prayer speaks of the forgiveness of sin, but that is not all that the sacrament does. Vatican II was an opportune time to modify the prayer to better express the effects of the sacrament, and to simplify the rite. The four anointings on the head were condensed into the single anointing of the forehead, and the prayer is now, “Through this holy anointing, may the Lord, in His love and mercy, help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who frees you from sin, save you and raise you up.” As we see, this prayer speaks of the help that we receive by the grace of the Holy Spirit, help that we especially need in times of grave sickness. The People of God are very considerate of me, and often times say "don't want to bother you, Father,” and so are hesitant to ask for this sacrament. Honestly, what I want to be busy doing is celebrating the sacraments, especially with those who are suffering. This sacrament is for anyone who begins to be in danger of death because of sickness or old age, so if that describes you or someone you know, please let me know so that we can together call upon the grace of the Holy Spirit for help. -Fr. ISAIAH 49:3, 5-6; 1 CORINTHIANS 1:13; JOHN 1:29-34 As we consider the reading for this week we need see that each of the individuals had a mission handed them by the Lord. God has a plan for each of us. Yes, we too, have a mission handed us from God. In the first reading the Unnamed Servant had a mission to carry out: to call the Israelites to return to their home land and to their God. He was to be a “Light to the Nations”. In other words, He was for all people. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians is addressing the people of God who have been sanctified in Christ. In the next six weeks we will see the issues Paul has with the people of

Corinth. We will see how Paul is concerned about their division and how he will call them to all walk with Christ. As always, Paul is on a mission! John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for the One to Come. When he saw the dove descend on Jesus he knew he saw the Christ. Once he baptized Jesus, his main mission was completed. We too, are a people with a mission: to bring ourselves closer to our God and to lead others there. For more information or to sign up for a small group contact Karen Fish at (952) 239-1949. Reflection Questions:  Do I recognize that I have been given a mission? If so, what is it?  What should I do to discover what God has planned for me?  Have I accepted my mission as a call from God?

SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL

Confesiones, domingos 12:30pm Santa Misa, domingos 1:00pm

Pastor: Rev. Padre James Liekhus (Padre Jim) 952-935-5536 www.stgabrielhopkins.org

II Domingo Ordinario “A”

LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura —Tú eres mi servidor, Israel.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
