16. S1 PRACTICE WITH THE VERB GUSTAR (workbook page 4)

NAME__________________

I. The verb “gustar” is from a category of verbs that have a special sentence construction. This verb in general is only used in the third person singular and third person plural (“gusta” and “gustan”) and in front of the verb is placed an indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, les). “Me gusta pizza.” Is translated into English as “I like pizza” but means in Spanish “Pizza is pleasing to me” In the Spanish thought process the subject is “pizza” NOT “I” and so the verb is conjugated for “pizza” and NOT for “yo”. “Nos gusta cantar” is translated into English as “We like to sing” but means in Spanish “Singing is pleasing to me”. Notice that when an infinitive follows the verb “gustar” the subject is the infinitive and so the translation is always “gusta” NOT “gustan” Let’s practice these concepts: Follow the pattern and fill in the rest of the chart: Me gusta la leche. Te gusta el agua.
