Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

This Thursday, August the 15th, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Assumption into heaven. The feast of the Assumption goes back to the very early days of the Church. While devotion to the Mother of Jesus was strong from the beginning of the Christian era, there were always controversies regarding Mary’s status. Some Christians asked, “Was Mary just the mother of human Jesus, due only the respect of other holy people?” While others claimed that we should most certainly honor Mary as the Mother of God since, after all, she gave birth to the Messiah. The Council of Ephesus (431) at last declared that since Jesus was a unique person, at once human and divine, then Mary must at the same time be the earthly mother of the historical Jesus as well as the Mother of God. As the centuries progressed, devotion to Mary grew more fervent along with the firm belief that the Blessed Mother continues to co-operate even now in a special way in our salvation. Mary is our intercessor, and her concern for the human family is a mother’s concern for her children. Throughout the ages she has appeared, often to children as in the case of Lourdes and Fatima, bringing her message of hope and encouraging us to pray. Mary herself was hardly more than a girl herself when the Angel Gabriel came to her with the news that she would be mother of the Savior. Her response was, “Let it be done to me according to your word.” Mary said “yes” to God, and she continued saying “yes” for the rest of her life. Although the facts are few, we do know from Scripture that Mary’s life, linked so intimately with that of her Son, was marked with difficulty and sorrow: the uncertain birth in a stable, the dangerous flight to Egypt, the pain of seeing Jesus rejected, the unspeakable agony as she witnessed the Crucifixion. The Blessed Virgin suffered these events, not as an angel or a goddess, but as a woman and a mother. We have long honored Mary as the quintessential symbol of the pilgrim Church on earth and as the perfect disciple of Jesus Christ. Although there have been many centuries of strong Marian devotion, it’s rather interesting that the doctrine of the Assumption of Mary is actually the last official dogma declared by the Catholic Church. It was promulgated by Pope Pius XII in November of 1950 in the wake of World War II with all its terrible destruction. In declaring Mary’s Assumption, body and soul, into heaven, the Holy Father wanted to express that we are all equally precious in the eyes of God, and that every human being, high or low, is worthy of the same dignity and respect that we offer the Blessed Mother. Fr. Ulysses

Padre Ulises

Archdiocesan Annual Appeal 2019 Our assessment for this year is $78,542.98. This Archdiocesan tax supports all those many offices, ministries and charities that individual parishes alone cannot cover. These include the Marriage Tribunal, support of retired priests and nuns, and financial help to our Catholic Schools. To date we have received about $ 55,746. Please consider what you might do to help us meet our obligation by the end of the year. Thank you !

Today’s Second Collection is for our Religious Education Programs. It supports our School of Religion, including classes for First Communion, preparation for Confirmation and our Adult Education Program (RCIA). It also covers the Children’s Liturgy, Youth Retreats, and the training of catechists.

The second collection next week will be for our Liturgy Fund. St. Francis Center in Redwood City Seeking volunteer ESL teachers for adult students. One hour to an hour and a half per day, Mon.—Fri. Please contact Tess at the Center at (650) 365-7829 if you’re interested. Our pastor, Father Ulysses, will be taking a short break to visit his mother and other family. He will be away from Monday August 12 to Friday August 16. Father Paulinus, our former parochial vicar, will be here to cover the daily Masses for Fr. Ulysses, and to visit.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday August 15th is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation. We will celebrate only one Mass that day because there will be a big school event using the parking lot in the evening. For those who wish to attend an evening Mass, our neighboring parishes of St. Pius, St. Charles and St. Anthony all will have 7:00 p.m. Masses that night.

It’s still not too late!
