Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

On Thursday of this week, July 11, we will celebrate the memorial of one of our most well-known saints, Benedict of Nursia. Although St. Benedict lived in the 500’s A.D., he remains one of the most popular saints in our Church calendar. Devotion to St. Benedict expresses itself for many people in the wearing of what is called the Benedict Cross-Medal. It would take a longer article than this to detail the profound symbolism on this medal, but suffice it to say that it is a very strong talisman against evil. The importance of St. Benedict in the history of the Church is as founder of Western monasticism. For many centuries the monasteries played a crucial and active role in society. This kind of religious life in which people, both men and women, separated themselves from the world in order to pray and advance themselves spiritually had begun in the deserts of Egypt in the early Christian era. Monasticism then spread to Europe and took hold in that period after the fall of the Roman Empire which we call ‘the Dark Ages’. The monasteries of Europe, from Italy all the way to Ireland, are credited with having saved Western civilization during a time in which all learning and culture would have been lost to barbarism, and many tribes overran what had been the Roman Empire. In addition to a life dedicated to prayer and work, the monks copied manuscripts and they kept alive the knowledge of medicine, architecture, art, agriculture as well as the philosophy and spirituality of earlier ages. St. Benedict is responsible for writing a monastic rule that was adopted all over Europe. This included praying the Liturgy of the Hours throughout the day, manual work of various kinds, and obedience to an Abbot or Superior who was elected by all the monks. The monasteries, whether run by nuns or monks, provided shelter for pilgrims and other travelers; they served as hospitals for the sick and dying; they took care of the very poor, and they offered education to children. Rather than being apart from, the monasteries were actually the center of the cultural and religious life of a community. Many great cities of Europe such as Munich in Germany or Monaco on the Riviera began as monasteries, and monasteries were the origin of the first universities. Many of these monastic religious communities are still thriving today, including the Franciscans, Carmelites, Dominicans and many others, although their numbers are far fewer than in the past. On the feast of St. Benedict this week let us pray for an increase of vocations, asking the Lord of the Harvest to send more people to dedicate themselves to God as priests, religious sisters and brothers, as well as to be lay workers in the vineyard of the Lord. And may God protect us from all harm. Fr. Ulysses

Padre Ulises
