Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

On Saturday we celebrated a special Feast of the Church. This feast, marked as the Fourth Joyous Mystery of the Rosary, is the Presentation of the Infant Jesus in the Temple. This solemn feast is one of the oldest on our Church calendar and it originated in Jerusalem where Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple would of course have taken place. In Jewish law, a woman was considered ritually unclean for a period of about forty days after giving birth. This prohibited her from many activities, including participation in the public prayer life of the community. After the 40-day period had concluded, the woman would then go to offer a sacrifice of two doves and to be blessed by the rabbi in the temple. In addition, a boy child would be taken to be presented to the priests. In St. Luke’s beautiful Gospel for this day, Mary and Joseph encounter in the temple on this day a very holy and devout man named Simeon who all of his life has been waiting for the promised Messiah. When he takes the Infant Jesus in his arms, he is filled with the Holy Spirit as he realizes he is holding the Savior. At that moment, Simeon utters a prayer to God saying, “You can now take me, Lord, because I have seen the salvation you promised.” When they hear this, Mary and Joseph are astounded. Then Simeon turns to Mary and tells her something both profound and painful: that her Son is destined for the rise and fall of many in Israel. In other words, many will be cured of their illnesses and even more will find enlightenment and peace through Jesus’ teachings. Sadly, many others will not be able to accept his saving words because the power of Satan is very strong. Simeon goes on to say that, as a result of the rejection of Jesus by many of his own people, Mary’s own heart will be pierced as if by swords. Mary, at that moment, could certainly not have known what lay ahead – that she would one day follow her Son up the hill of Calvary and watch him be tortured and put to death. Simeon concludes his prophecy by saying that all of this will happen “so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” We who are Catholic Christians two thousand years since the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus are still bystanders along the same road that he walked. We must accept that the terrible human suffering that exists in the world, as well as the persecution and denial of faith that we see all around us are part of the Way of the Cross as humanity treads its long, difficult path toward redemption at the end of time. It is our duty to stand firm in our faith, to proclaim it no matter how much we are mocked and disbelieved, and to let Christ, who is the Light of the World, rule our hearts and guide every step that we take. Father Ulysses.

Padre Ulysses.
