As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

Those of us who have been fascinated with the nuptials of Prince Harry of England to a beautiful biracial, divorced American actress, or with such excellent Netflix productions as The Crown, can’t help but consider the extraordinary changes that have occurred in our world. When in 1955, the current Queen of England’s sister, Margaret, wished to marry a man who had been divorced, she was not allowed to do so for that reason. And when I was growing up in the South in the early 1960’s, it was still illegal for Whites and Blacks to marry. Today our Church is still struggling with how to deal in a pastoral and sensitive way with Catholics who divorce and then remarry. And in many parts of the world, including in our own country, racial tensions still abound. On Friday of this week, June 22nd, we will honor two famous and prayerful men who defended the sanctity of Marriage and their Catholic faith during the years of the Protestant Reformation. Their names are John Fisher and Thomas More. Father John Fisher was a priest and a famous preacher who had already written four volumes against Martin Luther’s teachings upholding the Catholic teaching of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. When King Henry VIII decided to divorce his Catholic wife, Catherine of Aragon, in order to marry Anne Boleyn, Father John Fisher argued that the first marriage was still valid. From then on, Fisher was a marked man. When the Pope at that time offered Fr. John Fisher the red hat of a Cardinal, King Henry VIII remarked that he would have no head to put it on. John Fisher was taken to the Tower of London for execution. Just before dying, he pardoned the executioner and declared that he was dying for the faith of Christ’s Church. He sang the Te Deum as the axe came down on his neck. The very same year, Henry VIII’s own lawyer, Sir Thomas More, protested when King Henry VIII named himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England, and he argued against the persecution of Catholics. When the King asked Thomas More for his opinion on the marriage question, Thomas More answered honestly that he could not support the King’s divorce. Indeed, he refused to attend the coronation of Anne Boleyn as Queen of England. For this, he too was taken to the Tower of London and condemned to death by beheading. His last words were that he had tried to be the King’s good servant, but that now he was the servant of God alone. This fascinating and intelligent man remains well-known in history to this day especially for the book he wrote called Utopia. Four hundred years after his death, the life of Thomas More became the subject of a famous play and motion picture, A Man for All Seasons. Fr. Ulysses

Padre Ulises
