Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notas del Párroco

In the weeks following Easter our daily and Sunday lectionary offers us a continuous reading from the New Testament book, Acts of the Apostles. This book, along with the letters of St. Paul, is our best historical source for what happened immediately following the death and resurrection of Jesus. Acts especially focuses on the Apostles, Jesus’ closest followers whom he had elected to carry on his mission after he himself returned to the Father in heaven. Last week we celebrated the feast of the Apostle and Evangelist, St. Mark, and this Thursday we’ll celebrate the feast of two other Apostles, St. Philip and St. James. We know that Philip was one of the original twelve Apostles and one of the first chosen by Jesus. Apparently, he had been a disciple of John the Baptist, but then was drawn into Jesus’ circle. It was Philip who, at the miraculous feeding of 5,000 people, pointed out to Jesus that they only had a small amount of bread, insufficient to feed such a large crowd. Philip is also listed as being among those who were in the upper room at the time the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost. In the Gospel selected for this feast, Philip asks Jesus to show them the Heavenly Father. Jesus responds: “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” It is from such remarks that we understand that Jesus is God himself, one in being or substance with God, the Creator, and with the Holy Spirit. Jesus is, indeed, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Regarding the other Apostle, St. James, who shares this feast day with St. Philip, there has always been some confusion. This is because there are two Apostles named James. The St. James we honor this Friday is often called James the Less or James the Minor simply because he was younger than the other St. James. It was this St. James whose mother, also named Mary, was present with St. John and Jesus’ mother, Mary, at the foot of the Cross on Good Friday when Jesus died. The Gospels suggest that John was the Apostle of whom Jesus was fondest, and that the Apostle St. Jude Thaddeus was a cousin of Jesus’ and that some of the Apostles were brothers. So no doubt there was a deep intimacy among all the Apostles and eventually a strong sense of the great mission that had been entrusted to them by our Lord. Indeed, in the end they selected another, St. Matthias, to replace Judas Iscariot who had betrayed Jesus to keep their number at twelve. Our honoring of the Twelve reminds us of the importance of what we call ‘Apostolic Succession’. In other words, what Jesus taught he passed on directly to his Apostles for all times, and they in turned passed on this eternal “deposit of faith” to others in a continued line to the present day. St. Paul says: “I handed on to you what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day; that he appeared to Peter, then to James, then to all the Apostles.” It is through this same Gospel, given to us by the Apostles, that we are saved, if we only believe and follow it in faith. P. Ulises
