Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

I have sometimes thought that if God granted us in this life a real vision of heaven, if our souls could only for a moment be caught up into that realm of absolute bliss and beauty, if we could see the angels and experience the overwhelming joy of God’s divine presence, we would probably not want to stay on this earth with all its troubles and cares any longer than we have to. I imagine that God must implant in us some kind of desire to struggle and survive when we come into this world, otherwise we would leave it as soon as possible. It seems that, born into the world, we have to remain focused here while we are here because there’s so much work to do. Our Lord Jesus embodied for us the way we should go about our daily tasks no matter what they are. Whether raising our children, performing our jobs, doing our chores, studying, or volunteering, we should always put our complete trust in Christ and ask him to guide us along the right path. Then, whatever happens, we’ll be o.k. With Christ on our side, we can easily weather the ups and downs of life. In this Sunday’s first reading St. Paul so wisely says: “I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in [Christ] who strengthens me. . . . My God will fully supply whatever [I] need.” The secret for us is to carefully listen and respond to God’s constant invitation and to know that in every circumstance of our lives God is calling us to righteousness, challenging us to ‘do the right thing’ in the face of many temptations to do wrong. That’s the meaning of the parable our Lord tells in the Gospel today. A king gives a great feast for his son who is getting married. He sends out invitations to his friends. Unfortunately, most of the invited guests ignore the invitation. They’re like so many of us -- too distracted with all sorts of petty concerns, too egocentric, and too wrapped up in our private affairs to give any time to God and God’s Church. How sad that so many who consider themselves Catholic do not realize that their indifference to this Sunday gathering of God’s people and to the Paschal Mystery which we celebrate at Mass diminishes the Body of Christ and the community of the faithful. Worse, it cuts off those who are absent from the many graces which God offers at the Eucharistic celebration. God has prepared for us a great banquet, a feast that will satisfy every hunger, and not for a short time only, but forever. We shouldn’t ignore God’s invitation until it’s too late. Let’s be ready to meet the Lord when he comes out to greet us. And let’s do whatever we can to join hands with others so that together we can share in the splendor and glory of a world renewed and transformed by Christ’s saving power. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises
