This Wednesday October 11 we will celebrate the 55th Anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. When our late Holy Father, John XXIII, was canonized (along with John Paul II) on April 27, 2014, just 3 ½ years ago, it was decided that an appropriate day for his feast would be the day he opened the Second Vatican Council. Few events in the long history of our religion can match in importance or significance the affect that the Second Vatican Council has had on the Roman Catholic Church. The previous ecumenical council, Vatican I, had not been entirely successful. The pronouncement of the Infallibility of the Pope along with the Council’s condemnation of much of modern thought (called the Syllabus of Errors), has in the light of history, made Vatican I seem simply like a negative reaction to the changes in the world. Vatican II, on the other hand, was clearly an attempt to throw open the windows of the Church to modernity, to address the problems of contemporary people, and to show the continuing relevance of faith in Jesus Christ and his Church. It certainly took everyone by surprise when the Pope, then a man over 80 years old, announced his intentions to call a new Council. It is the feeling of most commentators that this bold decision was surely an inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Although the Holy Father died not long after the first session in 1962 had closed, the momentum and his great vision for the Council continued. The invitation to attend the Council went out to all the Bishops in the world, as well as to theological experts and other knowledgeable individuals. Even representative from other faiths were included. In the end, the first session was attended by 2,908 people who were seated in large bleachers facing the main aisle of St. Peter’s Basilica. While somewhat fewer came to the following three sessions in ’63, ’64 and ’65, the documents which came out of those sessions helped to profoundly change the face of the Church. They spoke of the place of the Church in the modern world, the relationship of the Catholic Church to other religions, and the place of lay people in the life of the Church. Perhaps most important of all were the documents on the sacred liturgy. The Council Fathers gave permission for the celebration of Mass in all the living languages of the world. This included the decree that the priest should face toward the congregation, that the Scripture readings could be proclaimed by lay readers, and that both the consecrated bread and cup could be offered at Communion. While Vatican II has certainly had its detractors, those who would say that the years after the Council have not been good ones for the Church with the dwindling of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, with fewer people attending Mass regularly and a general turning away from the practice of the faith, there are others who say we have just begun to accomplish what the Second Vatican Council called us to do. We must continue to reach out, we must continue to embrace, and we must be fearless in proclaiming the Truth of Jesus Christ our Savior to the world. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises
