Prayer in Beginning Your Day with Mass ± There is no higher form of communal prayer this side of heaven than Mass. With the beginning of Lent, we will also be beginning a daily Mass at our Cathedral at 7 am on Tuesdays and Fridays. Given all of the other scheduled liturgies and meetings, this schedule will be one that will be sustainable even following Lent and will also enable us to use our beautiful Cathedral for more than just weekend Masses and other liturgies. So, plan to join us on your way to work at our Cathedral at 7 am or on a break, prior to lunch at 12:10 pm downtown at Sacred Heart. Either way, seek the fuel of God’s grace and renewal that He gives to us in the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Son in the Holy Eucharist.

Also, do not forget about the great Lenten devotion of Stations of the Cross at 7 pm, preceded by a simple Soup Supper at 5:30 pm. See this bulletin for more details, as the location each week for language will shift between our Cathedral and Sacred Heart Church.

Reconciliation and Penance ± An essential element of how we grow in communion with our Lord is through honestly looking into the eyes of Our Lord as we come face to face with our sinfulness and Our Lord’s mercy and love. As you do, contemplate His mercy and then celebrate it in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and do your penance received, as together having each done this regular work of the spiritual life, we find our way back to Him, renewed. The sacrament will be available each weekday (now including Thursday) after the 12:10 pm Mass at Sacred Heart, as well as on Saturday afternoons at our Cathedral from 35 pm. Plan to join us as we fulfill with God’s mercy, His call to us: “Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart….” (Joel 2: 12)

Prayers and Condolences on the Death of Mrs. Lucina Beck Kane, Grandmother of Father John Kane ± Join me in prayer for the repose of the soul of Lucina Beck Kane, 98 years old and paternal grandmother of our Father John Kane. Mrs. Kane died last weekend, her Funeral Mass to be celebrated this weekend on Saturday morning in Virginia, with burial at a later date with her late husband in Arlington National Cemetery. Father Kane will travel with his family for the funeral and be back on Sunday for Masses. Be sure to offer prayers for he and his family, especially his father, David Kane, and all in mourning at this time.

Major Design Award ± As you and I frequently hear from those on pilgrimage to Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, we are deeply blessed by Our Lord with a sacred place to pray and worship, and which reflects the Light and Beauty, Who is God. This achievement is being recognized this weekend in Washington, DC with the presentation of the John Russell Pope Award from the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art for outstanding design. This award is given every two years and is among the most prestigious design awards in all of architecture.

Join me in extending congratulations to the architect for our Cathedral, Mr. Jim O’Brien and his staff at O’Brien and Keane Architects of Arlington, VA for this great honor and recognition. Additionally, I am grateful to Msgr. John Wall for his coverage of the Saturday evening Mass this weekend, so that I may attend the awards ceremony, returning then early Sunday morning for Masses, as usual.

Thank you for your Feedback: New Parish Center, Gym and Athletic Fields ± My thanks to all of you who attended the overall community meetings, as well as those for parents in our Cathedral school ± your questions were very helpful as we continue to move forward toward Phase I, which is the soccer and athletic fields on our Cathedral campus (this phase to begin in late Aprilearly May 2019) and on to preparations for Phase II, which is our Parish Center, containing meeting rooms and the gym.

My renewed thanks to Paul Bedo, who is the Chair of our Building Committee, as well as all the Committee members Steve Raper, Chris Derrenbacher and Carmen Liuzzo, for their great dedication to this important project for their great dedication to this important project.

The committee will be planning further information session meetings for May and June 2019 on Phase II of our project, with further details on our Parish Center for the Cathedral campus, as well as infrastructure improvements planned for our Sacred Heart campus, notably our Cathedral School building. Look for details upcoming.

Thank You for Parish Council Nominations ± My gratitude to all who proposed members of our community to serve on our Parish Council. With the nominations process now complete, biographical data on candidates and ballots will be assembled for the election process, which will occur by paper ballot an online on the two Sundays following Easter Sunday ± look for further details.

The Parish Council is the principal advisory body for pastors and in most parishes is comprised of members which are nominated and elected by the parishioners of the parish for a term of service. This service is to assist the pastor in strategic planning in the mission of Our Lord for the parish. There is much to consider, especially and not only with the rapid expansion of our parish, but also the work of evangelization to assist all of us in our growth in the spiritual life and discipleship of Our Lord Jesus ± an important reminder as growth in number does not always equal growth in Our Lord.

My renewed gratitude for all those who have served on this important council and especially Joseph Batta, Carlos Calderon, Erlinda Garcia Estrada, Peter Ferket, Mary Kennedy, Anna Maria Taylor, Elizabeth White, and Jose Zavala who will be shortly completing their term of service on the Council.

Further Update: 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal ± The final phase of our 2019 BAA was initiated this week to contact new parishioners with the opportunity to participate in the mission of Our Lord here in eastern North Carolina. With Bishop Luis, know of our gratitude to those of you who have already made your annual gift to the appeal. Like our offering at Sunday Mass, the BAA is part of our regular giving and a great reminder that our financial stewardship extends beyond the walls of our parish to throughout our Diocese, as we join also in returning to God, giving thanks for His blessings in our life.

Currently and with more gifts still remaining to process, we are at just over 700 gifts pledged and even closer towards our goal. With Kevin Green and Anne Speicher of our parish and who have assisted me in chairing the BAA this year, my great gratitude to each of you for your fabulous support of our parish and Diocesan ministries and for the many ways you witness to stewardship as a way of life. The Second Scrutiny of RCIA will be observed at the 12:00 pm Mass this weekend following Year A Readings, which can be found on www.USCCB.org, but not in this bulletin. First Reading Jos 5:9a, 1012

So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inher itance on a life of dissipation. While the Israelites were encamped at Gilgal on the plains of When he had freely spent everything, Jericho, they celebrated the Passover a severe famine struck that country, on the evening of the fourteenth of the month. and he found himself in dire need. On the day after the Passover, So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens they ate of the produce of the land who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. in the form of unleavened cakes and parched grain. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, On that same day after the Passover, but nobody gave him any. on which they ate of the produce of the land, the manna ceased. Coming to his senses he thought, No longer was there manna for the Israelites, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan. have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. The Word of the Lord R. Thanks be to God. I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. Responsorial Psalm Ps 34:23, 45, 67. I no longer deserve to be called your son; R. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; Second Reading 2 Cor 5:1721 I no longer deserve to be called your son.’ Brothers and sisters: But his father ordered his servants, Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: ‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; the old things have passed away; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. behold, new things have come. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. And all this is from God, Then let us celebrate with a feast, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; and given us the ministry of reconciliation, he was lost, and has been found.’ namely, God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, Then the celebration began. not counting their trespasses against them Now the older son had been out in the field and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. and, on his way back, as he neared the house, So we are ambassadors for Christ, he heard the sound of music and dancing. as if God were appealing through us. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. We implore you on behalf of Christ, The servant said to him, be reconciled to God. ‘Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ so that we might become the righteousness of God in him. He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, The Word of the Lord R. Thanks be to God. his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, Verse before the Gospel Lk 15:18 ‘Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey R. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ King of endless glory! your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on I will get up and go to my Father and shall say to him: with my friends. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’” “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So to them Jesus addressed this parable: The Gospel of the Lord R. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ. “A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.”

So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us.

2 Corinthians 5:20

In this passage, Paul invites us to celebrate the way in which God has reconciled all things to himself in Christ so that we can become a new creation in Christ. How wonderfully appropriate to this Sunday of rejoicing (Laetare Sunday). Also known as Rose Sunday, we are given a glimpse at the wonderful new beginnings that come with Easter resurrection.

In the Second Reading, where this passage is found, the Greek word katallasso means “to reconcile” or “to decisively change.” We are the ones called to reconcile and change what makes us less Christlike. How can we be ambassadors for Christ if our lives do not reflect the actions of Jesus? This is especially true in our response, or lack of response, to the oppressed, the poor, the outcasts, and the other.

The Catholic faith is both vertical in our relationship with God AND horizontal in our relationships with our fellow human beings and our living earth. Devotion to God is incomplete without the horizontal awareness that God is present in every aspect of God’s creation. We can see this in the example that Pope Francis offers (1/21/18): “Jesus walks through the city with his disciples and begins to see, to hear, to notice those who have given up in the face of indifference, laid low by the grave sin of corruption. He begins to bring to light many situations that had killed the hope of his people and to awaken a new hope. He calls his disciples and invites them to set out with him. He calls them to walk through to the city, but at a different pace; he teaches them to notice what they had previously overlooked, and he points out new and pressing needs. Repent, he tells them. The Kingdom of Heaven means finding in Jesus a God who gets involved with the lives of his people. He gets involved and involves others not to be afraid to make of our history a history of salvation” (cf. Mk 1:15, 21). This is what it means to act as an ambassador for Christ. What injustice have you ignored in our own greater community? Need some places to put your energy for the work of Christ on earth? Check out the many ministries we have outside the walls of our parish on our website: http://www.raleighcathedral.org/ socialjusticeprograms. Pass on the hope that you have received.

Statement from the Bishops and CRS on Recent Asylum Policy “We steadfastly affirm a person’s right to seek asylum and find recent efforts to curtail and deter that right deeply troubling. We must look beyond our borders; families are escaping extreme violence and poverty at home and are fleeing for their lives. Our staff and partners in Central America witness the suffering there and fight against it. Our government must adopt policies and provide more funding that address root causes of migration and promote human dignity and sustainable livelihoods.”

R.Honor y gloria a ti, Señor Jesús. R.Honor y gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.
