Bishop’s Welcome| Bienvenida del obispo The theme of this year’s Parish Ministry & Catechetical Conference is “Merciful Like the Father: Called to be Merciful.” It is fitting that the theme of the confer ence during this Jubilee Year of Mercy be one that reminds us that we must fol low the Father’s lead in bestowing Mercy on one another. The mystery of God, is rich in mercy and compassion (Eph 2:4 and Jas 5:11), manifested and brought about in Christ, the Father’s face of mercy, is continually at work through the gift of the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:22-23). A year of mercy: this is what the Lord proclaimed (Luke 4:18) and that we want to live now. This Holy Year has brought and is bringing to the fore the richness of the mission of Jesus which resounds in the words of the prophet Isiah (61:1): to bring a word and a gesture of consolation to the poor, to pro claim freedom to those who are bound by new forms of slavery in modern soci ety, to restore sight to those who are no longer able to because they are caught up in themselves and to restore dignity to those who have been robbed of it. The preaching of Jesus is made visible once again in the response of faith which Christians are called to offer by their witness. May the words of the Apostle accompany us:: “If one performs acts of mercy, let them be done cheerfully.” (MV) With these words we welcome you to this Conference. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids

Keynote Speaker Must We Forgive? Prodigals, Mothers, and God We’ve all heard the story of the prodigal son, yet we tend to dismiss it as a simple story of how God will take back a sinner. What about the deeper lessons within it, and the challenges of true forgiveness? In this session, we first explore forgiveness itself—what is it, all the wrong lessons we’ve learned about it from toddlerhood onward, the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation, and how God forgives us. Then, with ears open to God’s word, we hear the story of the prodigal son through the eyes of the mother, so that with a totally different perspective we can see God’s forgiving spirit in action. Come be challenged to soften the hard places in your heart. Learn to forgive and truly be free. ¿Debemos Perdonar?

Re-aprendamos a seguirlo. A-8 Showing Mercy: Effective Bereavement Ministry in a Parish When a loved one dies, mourners feel lost, alone, and in desperate need of the faith community. Yet most parishes provide little more than assistance in planning the services, and often not even that. Learn an integrated model for how your parish can serve, offer mercy, and comfort in the toughest times of their lives. Doing so fulfills both our Gospel calling to comfort those who mourn and the call of Pope Francis to practice mercy, and it is also an extremely effective form of evangelization that touches people’s hearts and changes lives. Amy Florian is a nationally recognized teacher, speaker and retreat director. Amy combines 30 years of parish experience with advanced education and the stories of over 2000 grieving people she has worked with to offer best practices to parishes. Dimension: Evangelization A-9 Pope Francis Said What? Looking at the Tough Issues Surrounding Family Life Today Pope Francis speaks common language uncommonly well. He has been a long time lecturer over many decades including the CIC, and is a former radio and television personality. Dimension: Theology A-10 The Catholic Church and Social Teachings Far too many Catholics are unfamiliar with the basic content of Catholic Social Teaching. More fundamentally, many Catholics do not adequately understand that the social mission of the Church is an essential part of Catholic Faith. Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions U.S. Bishops 1998. We will explore the key points of Catholic Social Teaching and how we can incorporate those into our lives and the lives of those we help to form and serve. (Participants may want to bring their Bible.) Mary Koss is a retired high school Theology teacher. Currently: Adult Bible leader at Blessed Sacrament Parish in G.R., Master Catechist, participant in Notre Dame STEP program. Dimension: Professional Theology Parish Ministry & Catechetical Conference 9

A-12 Liturgy and the Year of Mercy How can we share the riches of God’s mercy in our liturgies? This workshop will explore the theology found in the Mass, Liturgy of the Hours, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Penance that promote God’s mercy. Other tips and examples of how we can use the resources we already have will be given and shared to help your parish celebrate God’s mercy in prayer opportunities from Mass to Taizé prayer services. Father John Thomas Lane, SSS is a member of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers and is pastor of his home parish, the Roman Catholic Community of Saint Paschal Baylon, Highland Heights, OH. Catharine Lentz is the Director for the Office for Worship for the Diocese of Grand Rapids as of the middle of April 2016. Dimension: Evangelization A-14 The Spiritual Works of Mercy in Contemporary Context Less popular than the corporal works where the recipient of our mercy mostly benefits, the spiritual works of mercy most often benefits the one who extends the kindness. This workshop first explores the history of these acts of “freely given loving kindness” in the Catholic tradition. After a cursory review of the meaning of each extension of mercy, a more in depth discussion of number two, “admonishing sinners” and number six, “forgiving enemies” follows soliciting participants’ insights. Dr. Robert Marko is professor and chair of Theology at Aquinas College where he teaches principally ecclesiology, moral theology and Catholic social teaching. 10 Parish Ministry & Catechetical Conference

A-15 The People of the Book under Sharia Law Last year we considered the question of Jihad and Islam. This year we will consider the civil status (known as Dhimmi) of Christians and others regarded as “People of the Book” in Islamic doctrine. It is often reported that Islam is the most tolerant of Middle Eastern monotheistic faiths. We will have a chance to rest that report by examining what Islam teachers in the Qur’an and Sunna and contemporary and historical example of Dhimmi in practice. Dr. Dennis Marshall is Professor of Theology at Aquinas College. Dimension: Evangelization A-16 Sharing the Bible with Children

It is a wonderful privilege to be called to teach children. This workshop will encourage you in your calling, develop your teaching skills and explore creative ways to share God’s Word with children. Glenys Nellist, a native of England, serves as Coordinator of Children’s Ministry for the West Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church. She lives in Grand Rapids and is a wife, mother, grandma, Sunday school teacher and author of two popular children’s book series: Love Letters from God and Snuggle Time. Dimension: Methods or Evangelization A-17 Understanding Scrupulosity Many Catholics struggle with scruples, perfectionism, and spiritual anxiety. They love God but are plagued by a compulsive need to stave off God’s just judgment by thinking, praying and acting flawlessly. They struggle to judge actions by objective moral bearings, seeing sin where there is no sin. Being gentle with themselves feels like laxity, and laxity is repugnant. Learning and living the truth of “for freedom Christ set us free” (Gal, 5:1) is not just a challenge, but the challenge these scrupulous Catholics face. This workshop will explain the basic manifestations of scrupulosity and provide suggestions for pastoral care. Rhonda Ortiz is a Lay Dominican and a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales, Holland. She writes for a number of Catholic publications on topics of spirituality and culture. Dimension: Spirituality A-18 A Journey of Faith & Courage—a Catholic Life Lived with Asperger's’ Syndrome

He was the recipient of the Science Educator of the year in NC and as a result studied in the Rainforest in Belize. Dave Pietrowicz, MA has degrees from Eastern Mi University, Western Mi University, Pennsylvania College of Optometry and the College of William & Mary. He has worked as an educator of the blind for 35 years. Dimension: Spirituality

A-19 RCIA 101 This is an overview of the four stages and each of the rites. Everything you wanted to know about the RCIA in language you can understand. Unique vocabulary will be defined, the richness of the rites will be explained, and practical issues faced by those implementing the RCIA in parishes will be considered. Shows how Christian Initiation is a process of faith formation which responds to the various contexts people come from while presenting the richness of our Catholic faith. This workshop is vital for new or nearly new RCIA Directors and is a valuable overview for team members. Pete Ries is the RCIA Director at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and St. John Church and Student Center in East Lansing, Michigan. He is the former Director of Catechesis and Director of Evangelization, RCIA and Adult Faith Formation for the Diocese of Lansing. Dimension: Evangelization A-20 Praying with Children Prayer is Power!!! This workshop will explore ideas and strategies that will help children learn to pray. We will discuss practical ways prayer can be integrated into catechetical sessions and focus on creative ideas that can be immediately used with elementary children. Sandy Rigsby has served as a director for children and adolescent catechesis and youth ministry and has over 20 years’ experience in faith formation. Sandy is a sales consultant for Saint Mary’s Press. Dimension: Methods (Evangelization)

A-21 Youth Evangelization Review of the NFCYM document on Evangelization and use of the variety of tool kits that will enable leaders to apply the basic principles of youth evangelization to a variety of settings. Pat Rinker has been a diocesan director of youth ministry for 22 years and served on the national committee that produced the evangelization document and tool kit that will be examined in this workshop. He is presently the Director of Lay Ecclesial Ministry Certification for the Diocese of Lansing and Director of Adult Faith Formation for St. Gerard Parish in Lansing. He is married to Karen and together have 3 children, 5 grandchildren and are grateful to be caretaker for Karen’s father. Dimension: Evangelization

A-22 “Eucharist is a Meal and a _____________” Nearly every faithful Catholic knows to fill in the blank above with the word “sacrifice.” But what does that mean? Does the word “sacrifice” have any particular relevance in modern times? While the Church’s understanding of the sacrificial elements of the Eucharist will be summarized in this session, our higher goal will be to develop a deeper appreciation for the mystery of the Eucharist and how to incorporate the spirituality of the Mass into everyday living. Father Chris Rouech is pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Grandville and has served as director for the diocesan Office for Worship. Dimension: Spirituality 12 Parish Ministry & Catechetical Conference

A-23 Getting Parents Involved in Faith Formation: Classroom Methods for Catechists Are you looking for practical ways to engage parents and empower them to take up their roles as primary educators of the faith to their children? This workshop explores the amazing impact that parents have on their children’s faith formation, and provides practical help to catechists seeking to nurture faith within the homes of our Catholic youth. Patrice Spirou is Assistant Director of Religious Education in the Office of Formation & Discipleship in the Archdiocese of Atlanta where she is a passionate advocate for family centered faith formation. Patrice is also a wife and mother of four, and has more than twenty-five years of experience ministering and teaching in Catholic schools and parishes. A-24 The Church, the State, the Election, and Catholic Advocacy This workshop will discuss the true meaning of the “Separation of Church and State,” how to prayerfully consider casting a vote, and how Catholics can become advocates for current issues facing society as part of their baptismal call. Paul Stankewitz is a Policy Advocate with the Michigan Catholic Conference. He represents the Catholic Church before the State Legislature. A-25 What does it mean to have a Spirituality/Spiritual Life?

In this workshop, participants will look at what does it mean to have a spiritual life? Why is it so important to understand one’s own spiritual life as one who is called to share the faith with our youth? How does my Baptismal call to be prophet, king and priest influence my spiritual life? What do my students teach me about my own spiritual life? These are some of the questions that will be looked at through an interactive process. Sister Ann Walters, OP is a Grand Rapids Dominican with a background in elementary education, adult faith formation and spiritual direction. Presently she is serving as a Spiritual Director and Adult Faith Formation presenter and facilitator through Dominican Center at Marywood. A-26 Looking at the Mother of Mercy, Our Life, Our Sweetness and Our Hope So much of why we as Catholics honor Mary has to do with what we believe about her. In this workshop we will look at exactly what we believe about Mary and see how God pours out His mercy on us through her. Mrs. Lucrezia Esteban, OP is a wife, mother, grandmother, works full time and is a Lay Dominican. Consecrated to Our Lady, she leads the RCIA program for Our Lady of Grace and St. Mary’s in Muskegon. Dimension: Spirituality

A-27 Faith and Reason, a Thomistic Approach to Faith vs Science Faith and reason. Today’s world tries to pit the two against each other in a battle royale of intellectual arenas, but the truth is, both are necessary components to discovering the truths of God. Through the observation of created things, we are able to go deeper into our understanding of these things to discover their first cause, namely God. Come and see how Aquinas approaches these truths and how you can better explain them to others. Mr. T.J. Burdick is the proud father of four, and blessed husband to Maribel. He is a Lay Dominican and a current school teacher. He authored 99 Ways to Teach Like the Master with En Route Books and Media. B– 9 If you think you are religious and do not bridle your tongue, your religion is in vain (cf. James 1:26) “From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. This need not be so” (James 3:10) The letter of James challenges our speech, our tongue, and our use of words. Controlling the tongue is much more than simply not cursing and swearing. We will explore the various ways we can sin with our speech. The title of this presentation comes from James’ harshest words: “If you think you are religious and do not bridle your tongue, your religion is in vain” (1:26). This workshop will consider the question of how creation is “groaning” (Rom 8) in contemporary culture and Pope Francis’ response in Laudato Si’. Participants will have the opportunity to watch a 1/2 hour episode of a new 6-part documentary on Creation which presents case studies from around the country and examines them from the perspectives of science and faith. The group will then discuss the film in light of key principles in Laudate Si’, Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment. In this workshop we will introduce participants to the Pope’s encyclical and hope to inspire ways of living mercifully” in relation to creation.

Dimension: Methodology (Evangelization) C-24 Suicide in todays world: the MYTH, LIES and the FACTS In the past 20 years suicide in the world has grown at such a fast pace that it has become the 3rd leading cause of death in many of the age brackets. Today with the vast and always changing ways to communicate with one another a new problem has started with “Bullyside” (Committing suicide to get away from the constant harassment of being bullied on line). Many people feel that this is no problem because “we all got bullied in school and didn't kill ourselves”. I hope to inform those who attend to understand the difference and help change others who believe this way. Caution: This workshop will discuss real people who took their own lives, their stories and the stories of those that they left behind. This can be very informative but at the same time very difficult for some people to be part of. Please pray on this before you sign up if you believe this workshop might give you hardship. C-28 Praying with Mother Teresa Next year will be the 20th anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death in Calcutta and she was just declared a saint on September 4, 2016. The power of her mercy to the poor and hurting continues to inspire us. And her faithfulness through her dark night of the soul can give us light in our own darkness. What gentle words can she share with us today, this saint of mercy and goodness? This session will provide an overview of her life, her prayer, and her silence about the silent treatment of God to her after she moved into the streets of Calcutta for over fifty years. Mother Teresa is a great example of faithfulness, loving God no matter what.
