Renewing Your Strength Pastor Mick Weltin

Praying through the Son

Pastor Jason Paugh

Today’s Service Morning Today is Pastor Mick Weltin’s last Sunday as an Assistant Pastor at FPC. He will be assuming his duties as Senior Pastor of Inverness Presbyterian Church PCA in Dundalk, Maryland (in the greater Baltimore area). Dundalk is a blue-collar industrial area with lots of African refugees, as well as a growing Hispanic community. As Mick informed the elders and deacons at his last joint session meeting, he is so grateful for the opportunities and training he’s enjoyed here at FPC. He feels that God has used that training to prepare for this new phase of his ministry. We wish him Godspeed and great success! Pastor Mick will be preaching a sermon titled, Renewing Your Strength, based on Isaiah 40:27-31. This is part of a lengthy passage in Isaiah (40:1-55:13) in which he encourages the future exiles in Babylon to return to the Promised Land. These prophecies were delivered more than a century and a half before several events transpired. Isaiah predicted Israel’s immediate deliverance from Babylon by Cyrus (44:24-45:13), the coming of the suffering Messiah to save them from their sins after they return to the Promised Land (42:1-7; 49:1-13; 50:4-11; 52:13-53:12), and Israel’s final salvation in the last days (51:6). All of these prophecies are merged in Isaiah so that from his perspective, the restoration after the Exile begins the new age, and this first taste of salvation through God’s servant Cyrus, coalesces with the greater salvation that Christ as God’s servant will bring His people. Today, we have even more confidence in Isaiah’s words because they have been fulfilled in Christ and are continuing to be fulfilled in His Church (2 Pet. 1:19). This morning’s text closes with these words:“…but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” (Is. 40:31). The verbs used in this prophecy – mount up, run, and walk give a vivid picture of the spiritual transformation that comes through faith. We close our service today with a hymn based on an 8th century Irish poem that was translated by Mary E. Byrne in 1905 and versified by Eleanor Hull in 1912. Eleanor Hull was a writer of English history and literature and put the prose of Byrne’s translation into verse form and included it in her book of poems, The Poem Book of the Gael. The melody for this hymn is a traditional Irish tune. God has given Pastor Mick a vision for his new pastoral duties in Maryland. As we sing this musical prayer, let us also ask God to give us a vision to do His work that will require our complete reliance upon His enabling power to accomplish it well.

“Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that Thou art- Thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.” Evening Tonight Pastor Jason Paugh continues our teaching series on prayer. Last week Pastor John noted that prayer is to the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit. We now look at prayer addressed through the second person of the Trinity – Jesus, the Son. Pastor Paugh’s message is titled, Praying through the Son, and is based on Hebrews 4-5. Please join us for praise, prayer, and a greater understanding of the Bible’s teaching on prayer.

Confession of Sin

Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against You. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from Your ways, in wasting Your gifts, in forgetting Your love. Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease You. Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light and walk in Your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Ezekiel 36:25-26

“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” El Aseguramiento del Perdon

Ezequiel 36:25-26

“Los rociaré con agua pura, y quedarán purificados. Los limpiaré de todas sus impurezas e idolatrías. Les daré un nuevo corazón, y les infundiré un espíritu nuevo; les quitaré ese corazón de piedra que ahora tienen, y les pondré un corazón de carne.” * Confession of Faith (from the Westminster Confession, Part III) We believe God requires of us faith in Jesus Christ and repentance unto life to escape the wrath and curse of God due to us for sin; We believe by His free grace we are effectually called, justified, and sanctified, and gathered into the visible church out of which there is no ordinary possibility of salvation; We believe that we also are given in this life such accompanying benefits as assurance of God’s love, peace of conscience, joy in the Holy Spirit, increase of grace, and perseverance therein to the end. We believe that at death, we are made perfect in holiness and immediately pass into glory; we shall openly be acknowledged and acquitted in the Day of Judgment, and We believe we are made perfectly blessed in the fully enjoying of God for all eternity. Amen.

* The Gloria Patri

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands, come before His presence with singing! Know ye the Lord is God; He hath made us. We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. Be thankful unto Him and bless His name. For the Lord is good, His mercy everlasting. His truth endureth to all generations. Make a joyful noise, make a joyful noise! Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!
