INSTITUT MAX VON LAUE PAUL LANGEVIN

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) situated in Grenoble, France, is an international centre for scientific research. It is Europe's leading neutron science facility. We receive over 2000 visiting scientists per year to carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields. The Science Division currently has a vacancy for a:

Research Scientist (m/f) NEUTRON REFLECTOMETRY Duties : The Large-Scale Structures (LSS) group comprises a range of instruments designed to carry out studies on the structure of matter on a scale of one to hundreds of nanometers. The range of science covered is broad, from polymer and colloid science through structural biology to materials science. Working within the LSS Group in the field of Neutron Reflectometry while carrying out your own active research programme on biophysical systems at interfaces, you will be in charge of:  co-running the FIGARO reflectometer participating both in the day-to-day operation of the instrument as well as its technical development and upgrades including the implementation of RAINBOWS,  providing support to users for scientific experiments and offering guidance with data analysis,  promoting scientific partnerships in your field of research,  participating in the longer term development of instrumentation, sample environment and data analysis. FIGARO is a state-of-the-art high flux, flexible resolution, and time-of-flight reflectometer with a vertical scattering plane. It is optimized for the study of horizontal surfaces such as free liquids (e.g. air/liquid and liquid/liquid interfaces) although measurements are also conducted at buried surfaces (e.g. solid/liquid interfaces). The instrument boasts the possibility to strike the interface from above or below the sample in a wide q-range as well as excellence in kinetic studies. Main research activities include the study of soft matter and biological systems at interfaces.

Qualifications/Experience : PhD in physics, biophysics or physical chemistry, or equivalent. We are particularly interested in highly motivated candidates with experience of research in interactions that involve biological membranes at interfaces who wish to carry out a personal research programme and contribute to the scientific environment of biophysics at the ILL. Good computing skills and a general interest in software development would be an asset.

This is an excellent opportunity for a young post-doctoral scientist to develop expertise, broaden his/her experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world. Applications from more experienced scientists on secondment from their home institute will also be considered.

Language skills : As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

Notes : This post is a 5-year fixed-term contract. Further information can be obtained by contacting the first responsible scientist of FIGARO Dr. Richard Campbell, [email protected], +33(0)4.76.20.70.97 or via www.ill.eu/figaro; the head of the LSS Group: Dr. Giovanna Fragneto, [email protected], +33(0)4.76.20.70.62 or via www.ill.eu/lss (please do not send your application to these addresses). The interviews will take place on December 7 and 8, 2016.

Benefits : Generous company benefits (expatriation allowance), relocation assistance and language courses may be offered (for more information, please consult our employment conditions).

HOW TO APPLY: Please submit your application with a list of publications and the names of 3 references, including one from your current place of work, no later than 30/10/2016, via our website:
