LOOKING FOR ADULT CHAPERONES FOR FAITH SERVICE CAMP Adults who are interested in mentoring our middle school youth during their service projects and/or spending some fun time in various games and activities with them are needed the week of July 8-12. Help part of a day, one whole day, or multiple days—whatever fits your schedule! You will LOVE our youth and might consider this the best part of your summer. You must be up-to-date on your safe environment requirements. Contact Cindy to volunteer ([email protected]; 952-540-4762). NURSERY MINISTRY Our youngest parishioners need some cheerful, energetic, and loving adults to care for them during Mass! Could you serve approximately once/month from October through May? You will fall in love with these children and they will see our loving Lord Jesus through your actions. Contact Cindy to be added to our ministry team ([email protected]; 952-540-4762). Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) The weekend of June 22-23 we celebrate the very truth that sets us apart as Catholic Christians: namely, that Jesus is truly present, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. Jesus is not asking us to see the Eucharist as a symbol – He is demanding that we express our faith in Him as the Redeemer and Savior in a very physical and real way, by eating his Body and Blood. “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever, and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” John 6:51 Following the 10:30 Mass on Sunday, June 23rd, at the St. John campus, Father Liekhus will lead a Eucharistic procession around three blocks, carrying the monstrance that contains the Body of Christ. (The route is approximately half a mile and should take less than 10 minutes.) Please join the procession as we witness to the neighborhood and the world our belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.

PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE City of Hopkins Improvement Updates During the summers of 2020 and 2021, the City of Hopkins will be making improvements to the streets and utilities in the Interlachen Park Neighborhood. The City will have an open house at the St. John campus, 6 Interlachen Rd., Tuesday, June 25, at 5 p.m., in the Community Room, to provide information on the proposed improvements and schedule. Please join us to learn more!

MISSION APPEAL Stewardship Sharing Our Treasure June recipient: The Spiritans During the weekend of June 29-30, 2019, Reverend William Smith, CSSp, will visit St. Gabriel’s to speak at the Masses about the missionary work of the Church, and in particular, that of the Spiritans (Congregation of the Holy Spirit.). This visit is part of a national program to invite the parish to share in the mission work of the universal Church. The Spiritans are an international community engaged in a wide range of missionary activity in over 60 countries throughout the world. Fr. Bill himself spent many years as a missionary in Puerto Rico, and now travels across the country visiting parishes through the mission appeal program. When Jesus said: “You shall witness to me in Jerusalem and in Samaria and to the ends of the earth”, He made the spread of the Gospel an essential part of our Catholic life. We urge you to respond generously to Father Smith’s appeal. Thank you for the opportunity to minister in your parish and to share with the people our ministry of the Church spreading the Gospel throughout the world. Checks should be written to: St. Gabriel Catholic Church with “Missionary” written on the memo line.

Welcome New Staff! Elaine Sinkala actually started at St. Gabriel as our Administrative Coordinator back in April. She’s just been very elusive about getting her photo taken. Elaine’s office is located at our St. Joseph Campus. She is learning to produce our weekly bulletin, order supplies, and reconcile online banking donations, among other administrative things. She is also helping to manage St. Margaret’s Cemetery, as well as being the staff presence at the St. Joseph Campus, monitoring all the activities there and ready to help when needed. Her only requirement on accepting this position – a piped-in line of continuous hot coffee! If you stop by, please introduce yourself so she can get to know everyone.

Blake Road Improvements Summer 2019 Following are recent updates received from the communications coordinator for the Blake Road Project: • Median work along Blake Road from the railroad tracks to Boyce Street will begin near the end of June. • Concrete trail work continues on both sides of Blake Road • Xcel Energy continues to perform underground power work. • Landscape plantings are anticipated to begin in early July. • Permanent signal work will be completed on Excelsior Blvd. and Blake Road at the end of June. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Corpus Christi, June 23rd, 2019, Year C Genesis 14:18-20; Psalm 110:1-4; I Corinthians 11:23-26; Luke 9:11-17 The Church gives us this text from Genesis on this feast on which we celebrate the gift of the Holy Eucharist. Melchizedek’s name is based on two Hebrew words, indicating the character of kingship: melek means king, and sedek denotes just or righteous. Abram’s (originally Abraham) role in this short narrative is minor compared to Melchizedek’s. Abram’s one action is to give him a tenth of everything, a tithe-offering that is also an act of praise or blessing of God. Psalm 110 was understood as a prophecy of the son of King David, and so also of Jesus as the rightful Davidic heir. The reference to Melchizedek (rightful king) was understood by the first Christians as referring to the priesthood of Jesus. Jesus mysteriously re-established the ancient priesthood of Melchizedek and superseded it by making his sacrifice of bread and wine the very offering of his own body and blood on the cross. Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians is about the Holy Eucharist – Holy Communion that enables the Church to be and to remain the Communion of Saints. The holy bond that unites us to one another in communion (koinonia in the Greek), in the body and blood of Jesus in the Eucharist. The communion of which Paul writes is an unbreakable covenant bond with Christ and one another. In Luke’s Gospel there are two instances of Jesus blessing, breaking and giving bread: this miraculous feeding of the five thousand in Luke 9, and the story of Jesus, post-Resurrection appearance to two disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24. The first is a prophecy of, and the second harkens back to, the gift of himself in bread at the Last Supper in Luke 22. Because Jesus provides for the multitudes in abundance, even when the provisions are meager, we understand that the Church will not be left without the bread that sustains it. • The crowds have been listening to Jesus all day, and they are now hungry, as the apostle’s point out to him. Why do you think Jesus tells them to get the crowd something to eat? What was his purpose? • Have you or have you witnessed someone being challenged by God to do something that you/they thought couldn’t be done? • When you hear, “The body of Christ”, you answer “Amen”. What does that mean to you? For more information or to sign up for a small group contact Karen Fish at (952)239-1949.

Dear Parishioners, Thank you for the many birthday cards and prayers! I am very blessed to be the pastor of such a caring parish Fr. Liekhus Quote of the week: “Dear friends, if you learn to discover Jesus in the Eucharist, you will also know how to discover Him in your brothers and sisters, particularly the very poor.” St. John Paul II
