Elementary Winter Programs

Bravo! Before heading out on break Barrington, Bonita, Hunt and Von Renner elementary hosted their annual winter programs. Students performed a number of traditional and new holiday songs with each site adding their own flare. The After School Program filled their sites with music, Barrington students got the crowd to participate in "Baby Shark", Von Renner students danced, Hunt was visited by a tiny Santa who ran into the crowd to hand out candy canes and Bonita students had everyone wishing for a hippopotamus this holiday season.   In addition to marking the beginning of winter break, this year the winter programs also launched the Footsteps2Brillaince Winter Reading Challenge! In an effort to keep our students from getting "brain freeze" over break, students were given grade level specific game boards to track their daily reading on the Footsteps2Brilliance app. The Winter Reading Challenge was to be completed over the two weeks off and signed off on by  a parent/guardian. Upon completing the challenge and returning their game boards, students received certificates of completion from their teachers to congratulate them for their hard work. Over the break students totaled almost 1,000,000 words and brought us one step closer to 16,000,000!

Footsteps2Brilliance 16 Million Word Challenge

Hunt Writer's Workshop

On Wednesday, October 7, 2018 at the School Ready Initiative Press Conference, Superintendent Fillpot unveiled an 8 Million Word Challenge. This challenge was for NCLUSD Elementary Students, grades Kindergarten to 3rd, to read 8 million words using the Footsteps2Brilliance App before March 1, 2019. In less than one month the students at Barrington, Bonita, Hunt and Von Renner totaled 8,226,134 words and completed the 8 Million Word Challenge. Being that the 8 Million Word Challenge was no match for our students and staff, Superintendent Fillpot doubled the original challenge to 16 MillionWords by March 1, 2019! Barrington, Bonita, Hunt and Von Renner gladly accepted the challenge and are proudly displaying meters to track their "Footsteps to 16 Million Words". From November 7, 2018 to January 4, 2018 students have read 12,095,107 words and counting! Follow along with their progress at each site and on the NCLUSD website for a weekly district-wide update. Congratulations again to all who participated in the 8 Million Word Challenge and good luck on the 16 Million Word Challenge!

Parents went back to school on December 5, 2018 at Hunt Elementary's first Writer's Workshop Math & Literacy Dinner Night. The workshop was designed to form relationships between families and staff, bridge the gap between school and the home and offer family members a glimpse of what their students experience in the classroom.  After the introduction from Principal Williams, families were able to choose which "classes" to attend. The multipurpose room was lined with teachers from each grade level and families were given ample time to visit more than one teacher if needed. Lessons varied by grade level with an overall focus on writing activities using math and language arts. Teachers put their new students to work right away demonstrating effective practices from their classrooms. Family members were taught the same strategies their students use on a daily basis including, five finger retell, picture talk and how to analyze nonfiction text structures. Class was dismissed and families were treated to dinner from NCLUSD Nutrition Services. Providing dinner allowed for staff, students and families to share a meal and engage in casual conversation with one another.   The night was rounded out with 10 students presenting their character trait essays. The essays were responses to a sitewide writing prompt that focused on the character trait of the month. Students wrote about what kindness means, how to be kind and instances when others have been kind to them.  The writer's workshop is the first in a series of three to be held during the course of the school year.  Correction:  In the November Newsletter it was stated that there were no men's cross country runners who qualified for the section championship. That was incorrect as Junior Varsity athlete Matthew Flanders qualified to run at the section meet, but due to the air quality all non-varsity races were canceled.

Programas de Invierno en las Escuelas Primarias

¡Bravo!
