¡Felices vacaciones!

Hello, Brad. It’s Wendy. Hi, Wendy. Where are you? I’m on the Fantastic Princess and I’m so excited. It’s fantastic. We sail for Alaska in an hour. Have you got everything you need for the trip? Yes, I think so. I’ve got my tickets, passport and a map. It’s cold in Alaska, even in the summer. Have you got enough warm clothes? I hope so. I’ve got a jacket, some boots, a hat and a scarf. Oh, no. I forgot my gloves… . Don’t worry. There are shops on the ship and you can buy some gloves there. Oh, that’s good. Let’s see, I’ve also got jeans, trainers and a sweater. I hope I will be warm enough. I hope you have got sunglasses. It’s cold but sunny in Alaska. I know that. I didn’t forget my sunglasses. Have you got a camera? Of course, I’ve got two cameras. I’m going to take lots of pictures for the magazine. Have you got the itinerary for the trip? Yes, here it is. Do you want to hear it?

Brenda: Hi, Gary. Come and look at my pictures from my family’s trip to Niagara Falls. Gary: Oh, it looks like you had a great time. What did you enjoy the most at Niagara Falls? Brenda: Well, the hot air balloon trip over the falls was certainly an unforgettable experience. Look, here’s a photo of me standing next to the balloon. I’m excited and scared at the same time. Gary: How many people usually ride together on a balloon? Brenda: Around 30 – these balloons are quite big. Gary: Are there any pictures of you with your parents? Brenda: Yes, here’s one. We’re having dinner at a restaurant at the top of the famous Skylon Tower. The restaurant is very popular because it rotates around the Falls every hour. Here are some other photos of the Falls we took from the restaurant. Gary: Wow! Everything looks so small below. Great pictures, Brenda! Brenda: Great trip!

Writing Dear Mary, I’m writing to you from Montreal, Canada. My family and I are here for three days and we are having a great time. Look at the pictures. Montreal is a very cold city in the winter and there is a lot of snow, but we don’t feel cold. There is an area of the city under our hotel. Shops, restaurants, cinemas and the trains are underground. We can go there without going outside. We just take the lift down. Now I’m going to one of Montreal’s famous French restaurants. (Yum – I hear the crepes are delicious!) Love, Susie

Get your T-shirts, shorts and sun-hats out of the closet because you’re going to need them until Sunday. Remember to drink plenty of water and don’t stay in the sun for too long. A cool breeze from the Pacific Ocean will hit the San Francisco area. Weather conditions will be pleasant during the day but much colder in the evenings. Dress in layers; T-shirts under a sweater and a jacket for the evenings will be the best choice if you’re going to be out for many hours. But don’t worry, it won’t rain before Tuesday. If you’re in Chicago and planning to be outdoors this weekend, plan again. Heavy rainstorms will begin by early morning, so make sure you take your umbrella and raincoat with you for the next few days.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Forbidden City, the largest palace area in the world. There are 9,999 buildings inside these enormous walls. It took more than one million people to build the palace between 1407 and 1420. One hundred thousand special artists also worked here.

Listening CD Script Hello listeners, You’re listening to Radio Rainforest, somewhere in the Amazon. On today’s programme, we’re going to tell you about some of the strangest endangered animals in the world’s rainforests. The first animal is a kind of monkey called an aye-aye. It lives in trees in the rainforests of Madagascar, an island east of Africa. It’s got one long finger and giant eyes. It uses its finger to pull small insects out of trees. Another strange animal is the Azteca ant. It lives in the Amazon rainforest, on one tree. It’s got everything it needs in the tree – food, water and a home. It protects the tree and attacks vines when they try to climb onto the tree. The last animal is called an antbird. There are more than 200 kinds of antbirds and many of them are endangered. They live in the rainforests of Central America and the Amazon. They follow groups of army ants. The ants frighten insects and the antbirds eat the insects when they try to escape. That’s all for today. I hope youv’e enjoyed the programme. Tune in for our next programme.

CD Script Mary Read was a famous woman pirate in the early eighteenth century. When Mary was a teenager, she dressed up as a boy. Then she became a soldier in the English army. Nobody discovered her secret, but she fell in love with one of the other soldiers. They left the army and got married. However, Mary’s husband died soon after that, so she returned to the army for a short time. Then, Mary became a sailor. She still pretended to be a man. On the way to the West Indies, pirates attacked the ship and took Mary as a prisoner. Mary decided to be a pirate too. Another pirate on the ship was Mary’s friend. She was also a woman pretending to be a man. Her name was Anne Bonny.

CD Script Bram Stoker was born in 1847 in Ireland. While he was growing up, his mother told him a lot of horror stories. In 1878, Stoker went to England. While he was living in England, Stoker met his wife, Florence. He also began writing his own stories. Dracula was his most famous story. While Stoker was writing the book, Dracula, he found an article about vampire bats. Vampire bats bite animals while they are sleeping. That gave Stoker an idea; in the book, Count Dracula changed into a bat and flew outside his victim’s window. Stoker wrote 18 books. He died in 1912.

Listening CD Script Hello, I’m Jimmy. I live in the beautiful city of Venice, Italy. In Venice, there are no cars so people walk or take boats. Boats are very popular in Venice. Gondolas are my favourite kind. I sometimes take my girlfriend for a romantic gondola ride. My name is Chan and I live in Tokyo, Japan. There is always a lot of traffic so many people in Tokyo use the underground trains. During rush hour they are very crowded so special workers help push people into the trains. I don’t like to be pushed into the trains so I always ride my bicycle. Riding a bicycle is the best way to get around. Hello from Lima, Peru! My name is Leo. There’s so much traffic here in Lima that you can spend hours sitting in your car trying to get from one place to the next. I walk everywhere because it’s quicker than going by car or bus.

Hello. Hi, Jason. How was your trip to Egypt? Egypt is amazing. I had a fantastic time. You’re so lucky. Yeah. I spent three days in the desert. It was beautiful and quiet. What did you do there? We were driven to an excavation site by jeep. We saw many interesting things there. Tell me about them. Well there were bones and fossils. They were found by the palaeontologists. Oh, really! Did you dig too? Yeah. It was hard work, but I really enjoyed it. Did you find anything? Yes, I did. I found something really dirty. Wow! Was it an Egyptian mummy? No, it wasn’t. It was a plastic water bottle. Well, at least you found something!
