CAREER WEEK April 9 - 13 John Paul II Academy will be celebrating Career Week when we return from Spring Vacation. It will be an exciting time! Classroom Guidance Lessons will focus on Careers and College. There will be fun announcements and information about educational opportunities in Wisconsin after high school. There will be fun trivia about the teachers and where they went to college. Finally, I would like to have guest speakers come to talk about their careers. Please consider sharing information about your career with our students. If you would be willing to participate, please contact me at [email protected].

There will NO JASP on the week of March 26-29! No habrá JASP en la semana de marzo 26-29! Counseling Corner Mrs. Klein In just one short week, Quarter 3 will come to a close. Please make sure you are checking in to Powerschool with your child to make sure they have their work turned in. I am happy to report that the first week of Wisconsin Forward Exam Testing went very well. Students have been focused and working hard. Testing will be complete, with the exception of a few make-up tests, before we leave for Easter Vacation. When we return, Career Week will be in full Swing. Again, if you are interested in talking to our students about your career please contact me at [email protected]. Another topic that has been on my mind lately is technology and social media and the impact it is having on our children. Just how much time are our kids spending on their smartphones and other internet connected devices, like PlayStation and Xbox? What can we do to keep our kids safe in the cyberworld. First, talk with your children. Make sure to discuss that their online behavior needs to match their face-to-face behavior. Second, do not be afraid to set limits on how much time your child can be on their phone or gaming. Have a central location that electronic devices are stored and charged at night. Do not let your children take their phones to bed. Monitor what apps your children are downloading and who they are friends with online. Third, if you do not know what an app is or does, download it yourself to decide if it is something you want your child using. The list of social media apps is long and ever-changing: Facebook, Instagram, Musicl.ly, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, Youtube, Whisper, as well as the games your child is playing online, like Fortnite. I know I need to check on them to stay current. Third, model the behavior you hope your children use. Make sure you are not on your phone at dinner or taking your phone to bed at night. Finally, consider watching the CNN Special Report, Being Thirteen: Inside the Secret World of Teens. This 2 year study followed 8th graders and their use of social media; this documentary is very eye-opening as to how teens are using their phones.
