Building Fund Tithing Envelopes For those parishioners who receive tithing envelopes, you have probably noticed an additional monthly Building Fund envelope included in your packets. Discussed and approved by the parish’s Finance Council, Fr. All ongoing maintenance and projects have approval by the Pastoral Council and the Finance Council before they are implemented.

PSA 2016 The annual PSA will start in our parish soon. The PSA provides an opportunity for us to join together as one church family in realizing our goals as well as join with Catholics throughout the Diocese of Orange to support ministries and services that benefit our own parish as well as people all over Orange County. Look for a letter from Fr. Thomas along with a brochure about the PSA in the coming week, and prayerfully consider how your family will respond to this call to carry on Christ’s work in our community. A special Thank You to the volunteers who worked tirelessly to help us get this mailing put together and sent out to the 4,250 registered families in one day’s time. Your service is a blessing.

Financial Statements In an effort to save the cost of postage, end of the year tax statements that are requested will be emailed to you or will be available for pick up in the Reception Office. This would be a good time to update or add your email contact information. Financial contribution statements for 2015 will be processed only if you have used weekly envelopes. To request a statement, call the office at 949-951-8599 or email Shirley Burgos at: [email protected].

The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 24, 2016 THE YEAR OF MERCY

Pope Francis’ Ten Tips for a Happier Life 1. “Live and let live.” Everyone should be guided by this principle, he said, which has a similar expression in Rome with the saying, “Move forward and let others do the same.” 2. “Be giving of yourself to others.” People need to be open and generous toward others, he said, because “if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid.” 3. “Proceed calmly” in life. The pope, who used to teach high school literature, used an image from an Argentine novel by Ricardo Guiraldes, in which the protagonist — gaucho Don Segundo Sombra — looks back on how he lived his life. 4. A healthy sense of leisure. The Pope said “consumerism has brought us anxiety”, and told parents to set aside time to play with their children and turn of the TV when they sit down to eat. 5. Sundays should be holidays. Workers should have Sundays off because “Sunday is for family,” he said. 6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people. “We need to be creative with young people. If they have no opportunities they will get into drugs” and be more vulnerable to suicide, he said. 7. Respect and take care of nature. Environmental degradation “is one of the biggest challenges we have,” he said. “I think a question that we’re not asking ourselves is: ‘Isn’t humanity committing suicide with this indiscriminate and tyrannical use of nature?’” 8. Stop being negative. “Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem. That means, ‘I feel so low that instead of picking myself up I have to cut others down,’” the Pope said. “Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy.” 9. Don’t proselytize; respect others’ beliefs. “We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyses: ‘I am talking with you in order to persuade you,’ Know each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing,” the Pope said. 10. Work for peace. “We are living in a time of many wars,” he said, and “the call for peace must be shouted. Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet, peace is always proactive” and dynamic.

For more information, please call Georgie at 949-837-5570.

Bible Study Next Meeting: Wednesday, January 27th 9am and 7pm Last week we studied people changed by Jesus through healing miracles… “On leaving the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then, the fever left her and she waited on them.” (Mk. 1:2931) There are five healing miracles Jesus performs in Capernaum, as if to demonstrate the power of God’s kingdom, which is at hand. Jesus’ first three miracles are worked on the lowliest, outcasts of society...a demoniac (Mk. 1:21-28), Peter’s mother-in-law, the cleansing of a leper (1:40-45), a paralytic (2:1-2), and a man with a withered hand (3:1-6). Witnesses had different reactions to these events. Some immediately followed, some were suspicious and challenged him. Others plot against him. How do you think you might have responded if you were a witness: For further information, please call Nancy at 949-766-8126 or Barb at 949-768-1170.

This event is from 6pm February 12th through until 6pm on February 13th. The cost is $50. Students will fast from solid food for 24 hours and sleep in the parish hall. We will focus on Food Insecurity around the world, and in Orange County, engaging in a variety of activities to increase our awareness of the problems of hunger and contributing factors to this problem. We will take action to decrease this problem. Register by dropping off the completed permit and a check to the YM office.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
