THE JUBLIEE YEAR OF MERCY WHAT IS A JUBLIEE? “In Judaism and Christianity, the concept of the Jubilee is a special year of remission of sins and universal pardon. In the Biblical Book of Leviticus, a Jubilee year is mentioned to occur every fiftieth year, a year in which slaves and prisoners would be freed, debts would be forgiven and the mercies of God would be particularly manifest.” Pope Francis expands upon that definition by reminding us in his formal document announcing the jubilee; the year of Mercy is not simply a time of prayerful meditation. It is a reminder of God’s mercy and it calls us outside of ourselves; it calls us to action. Throughout this year our community will focus on the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy. Shortly we will publish a Calendar highlighting opportunities to participate through action or education, God’s plan for us to know and love our brothers and sisters in the world. CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY • • • • • • •

Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Shelter the homeless Visit the sick Visit the imprisoned Bury the dead

SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY • Admonish the sinner • Instruct the ignorant (This and the next work are extremely pertinent categories today, when so many people are confused by what the Church teaches on contraception, abortion, homosexuality, etc.) • Counsel the doubtful • Comfort the sorrowful • Bear wrongs patiently • Forgive all injuries • Pray for the living and the dead We ask for your prayer that we develop a calendar that expresses a meaningful year of Mercy for our community.
