Pentecost Sunday JMJ 15 May, 2016 My Dearest Parish Family, God be with us always. A Blessed Solemn Feast of Pentecost to all! Congratulations to our First Communicants, to their parents, families, relatives and friends. It always tugs the strings of our hearts to see these children graduate from holding their hands across their hearts to receive a blessing; to making an altar or a throne for Jesus when they receive their first communion. Our sincere thanks for all who taught, guided and journeyed with these children: Gloria, Tesoro, our Catechists and volunteers. Congratulations also to the adults who received the Sacrament of Confirmation today. Greetings as well to your families, relatives and friends who are part of this significant event of your faith journey. Gratitude to Tom, Linda and their team of Catechists who accompanied and prepared you to receive this sacrament. Congratulations to all of us for we are once again celebrating a day when we are given the Holy Spirit. The promised advocate, guide and abiding presence of God’s love. We always need to be reminded that we are bearers of the Paraclete whose love and grace is to be shared with everyone we meet. It is also a gift that provides us the graces we need in our discipleship. We need to reflect and pray which of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit would be very helpful in our spiritual life. I read once: “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for a good purpose. These charisms, the simpler and more widespread as

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! On Tuesday, May 3rd, we hosted our first ever panel discussion on Mental Health here at Santiago de Compostela, "Starting the Conversation". And that is exactly what we did! The Catholic Men's Fellowship can proudly take a bow for having forty enthusiastic attendees at the event. Starting the conversation about mental health is the beginning. Our first goal is to remove the stigma of shame and guilt that can be associated with a mental illness diagnosis. Negative stigma is the leading cause of someone not seeking the treatment, assistance and help they need. It is a timely topic with so many being underserved in our nation, community and possibly even our own Santiago parish. Michael Donaldson, the Director of Office of Pastoral Care for Families in All Stages, at the OC Diocese, provided a very supportive and encouraging message from Bishop Vann about mercy and compassion for our brothers and sisters who need our support. Our Diocese has an extensive list of resources and programs readily available to assist and support those affected by mental illness. The Diocese is also partnering with community resources, such as St. Joseph's Hospital, NAMI, and other faith-based organizations in OC. Our ministry has the full support of the Diocese to establish a ministry specific to the needs of our own parishioners. We are encouraged to utilize Diocesan resources, and to establish our own in order to strengthen the services available to our parishioners here at SDC. Carla DiCandia, Manager of Community Outreach for St. Joseph's Health and Gene Gadient, Health Educator - SJW Program for St. Joseph's Health, were wonderful examples of resources available to us through the Diocese and in our own community. They both provided information on mental health and also a broad range of resources available through St. Joseph's including onsite programs and support groups. Help and Hope The Mental Health Awareness Ministry has an overall goal of wanting to provide help and hope to those individuals and families affected by mental illness. Our initial goals are: 1) To remove the negative stigma associated with mental illness by having open and honest conversations in our parish. 2) Provide a readily available current list of local resources such as therapists, support groups, doctors, organizations, events, etc. to individuals and families in need. 3) Foster and create an environment of knowledgeable support and concern within our parish for those affected by mental health concerns. With the goal of being an avenue that helps lead people to hope and healing by breaking the chain of silence and isolation. Next Steps: Defining the Needs of Our Parishioners Calling all ministry leaders! I will be reaching out to you to gain insight into the possible needs of your individual groups. I cannot do this alone. I need your help. Let's help improve the lives of others by having compassionate attitudes and lending a helping hand where we can. Send me an email or call me directly: Laurie Alsted - [email protected] or 949-424-3686.

Hope For Wellness Mass—Walking with Families and Individuals who Desire God’s Hope In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, join our Diocesan Hope For Wellness Mass on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 7pm in the Arboretum at Christ Cathedral. Bishop Kevin Vann will be the Principal Celebrant. Christ Cathedral is located at 13280 Chapman Avenue, Garden Grove, CA 92840. To RSVP or for more information please call 714-282-6001.
