Every semester a different artist visits from overseas to give a masterclass. Recently Steven Isserlis came, and as well as giving a masterclass he performed a Schumann concert, which I loved. His advice during the masterclass was invaluable. I remember he talked about the iTiood of Tchaikovsky's music, and the fact that many people play it in a fairly depressing manner because they've heard about the tragedies of his life. But he said that, actually, when he wrote this particular piece Tchaikovsky hadn't got to that point yet and he was expressing beauty in his music rather than tragedy.

DANIEL PINI Cellist, bachelor's student at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australia THIS COURSE HAS a good balance between performance and academic work. There's a concert every week where students can play what they've been practising, and we all attend every concert and perform in two per semester. There are performance exams every semester, too. The course has a lot of academic subjects to choose from and, of course, some that are compulsory. The harmony course is obligatory, which I believe is unusual - it isn't mandatory in any of the other Australian conservatoires. The opportunity to learn with my teacher, Georg Pedersen, is one of the main reasons I chose to study in Sydney and I have one lesson per week with him. He has heiped me

I'm also involved in several chamber music groups. We rehearse every week and also play in seminars and give concerts. Although we form the groups ourselves, the department is very supportive - they run a referral service for groups that helps you to get work playing at weddings and other events, so as well as gaining experience it earns us a bit of cash. A typical day for me involves coming in early to bag a praaice room, and practising until the first rehearsal. Then there are a couple of lessons, then a break for lunch and in the afternoon lessons finish around six. During the week it's quite a full-on day. The music department is very friendly, and I find there's always someone you can talk to. There's also the Con Music Café, the social centre of the course - when it's time to relax everyone hangs around there with their friends. INTERVIEW BY CATHERINE PAYNE

This year I've got more time for practising, omething that is very easy at the conservatoire : lecause there's so much space and lots of I iraaice rooms. In my first three years, I had icademic classes like harmony, musicianship c¡nd performance practice. Last year I took a course on Beethoven's French connections, which I had to write an essay for. I chose to go to the conservatoire because I wanted lo focus on my playing, so I'm pleased that the academic classes have stopped now. It means that I've had time to do some teaching, too. I teach bass in schools for about six hours a week for the Birmingham Music Service and I've just taken on some Saturday teaching for the Sandweil Music Service.

performance at the Birmingham Conservatoire. I had lessons with Tom Millar from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for the first three years of my course and now I'm learning with Richard Lewis, from the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It was difñcult changing teachers at first, but I've enjoyed adapting to a new style. I've been doing lots of orchestral work with Richard, as well as preparing for the 50-minute recital I'll do at the end of the year. We have a lesson for an hour and a half each week and we decide what to play together - I show him what I've been working on and he recommends things for me to study.

There are lots of performance opportunities at the conservatoire, both solo and orchestral. it runs competitions and a lunchtime recital series that all students can apply for. At the beginning of each year, you do an audition for the head of strings who then decides which activities you do. I'm in the symphony orchestra and we've got a concert coming up at the end of the year, which we'll probably have a week-long intensive course for. We do other orchestrai projects that we have two-day courses for - I like these because I think they give you a realistic idea of what it's like to play in ar\ orchestra. I recently did a chamber music concert at the Purcell Room in London with other students from the conservatoire, which was a really good opportunity, I've really enjoyed my time at the conservatoire and I've had some great opportunities to gain orchestral skills. Participation in orchestra and chamber ensembles is required every semester. The orchestra plays eight or nine concerts a year, of which most violinists end up playing ali but two or three. Many of the concerts are at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, and while it was being renovated last year, the orchestra played concerts at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall. In addition, all students must perform at least once a semester at Mannes with their chamber group.

at Harvard University, but I realised that I really wanted to pursue a career in music, so getting a master's degree seemed like the next logical step. I was attracted to Mannes because of its location, in the middle of New York's Upper West Side, with its bustling classical music community, and also because of its impressive list of faculty members. Mannes prides itself on its theory programme, and no one gets out without a thorough acquaintance with species counterpoint and an introduction to Schenkerian analysis. There are quite a few elective courses, both performance classes and analysis classes. Many of these are incredibly interesting - from a performance class on Beethoven's chamber music with pianist Victor Rosenbaum to an improvisation seminar with Noam Sivan. I've found that there is far more offered than there is time to take. But the vast majority of my time is spent rehearsing or practising for lessons, not in a classroom or doing homework, which is as it should be given that we are training to be performers.
